Bears sign infielder Colina, add pitcher Trujillo

NEWARK, NJ - March 28, 2007 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced the signings of infielder Javier Colina and right-handed pitcher J.J. Trujillo for the 2007 season.
Colina was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent in 1997 by the Colorado Rockies and will be entering his tenth professional season. In 2002, he reached the triple-A level playing 95 games with for Colorado Springs of the Pacific Coast League batting .245 with 40 runs scored, and had 30 extra-base hits including 23 doubles. The native of Venezuela reached career highs with 156 hits, 70 runs scored, 37 doubles, 81 RBI, and 12 stolen bases in 1999 with Asheville of the South Atlantic League. That season, he finished fourth in the league in doubles, fifth in hits, and eighth in batting average, while representing his team in the SAL All-Star Game.
Trujillo began his career with Johnstown of the Frontier League in 1999, and advanced to the major leagues with the San Diego Padres in 2002. In four relief appearances at the big league level, the Texas native struck out three batters. In 2005, Trujillo finished first the Central League with 132 strikeouts and two shutouts, and second with three complete games.
"Javier and J.J. bring years of experience to the Bears and will add plenty of depth to their positions," said Bears Assistant General Manager Jim Cerny. "We expect big things from both players this season."
The Newark Bears will begin their ninth season at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, May 8 against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
