Bears Sign Bumstead And Pellegrine To Pitching Staff

NEWARK, NJ, Mar. 19-The defending Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears announced today that the club has signed both right-handed pitchers Michael Bumstead and David Pellegrine to contracts for the 2008 season.

Bumstead, the California native, is entering his 8th season in professional baseball, after originally being signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2001 by the San Diego Padres. In 2002, he set career highs with 10 wins, 26 starts, 145.2 innings pitched, and with 108 strikeouts while playing for Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League in the Single-A level.

The 30 year-old Bumstead reached the Triple-A level fives times in his professional career. His best season in the Triple-A level came in 2004 while playing for the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League, where he posted a 4-0 record in 18 appearances with a 2.57 ERA. Bumstead, is entering his first season with the Newark Bears and the Independent League and will be looking for a spot on the Bears pitching staff this season. In his career, he has compiled a 28-30 record in 267 appearances with a 4.37 ERA and 481 strikeouts.

Pellegrine, who was drafted in the 11th round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim out of Northeastern University in 2006, is entering his first season with the Newark Bears and his second professionally. In 2006, Pellegrine played in the Pioneer League with Orem, pitching in 12 games with a record of 1-0 and an ERA of 4.50.

After missing the entire 2007 season because of an arm injury, Pellegrine was signed by the Bears after the coaching staff watched him perform at a free agent tryout held at the Phillies' spring training facility in Clearwater, FL this past February.

The Bears open up defense of their 2007 Atlantic League Championship on Friday, April 25th against the Long Island Ducks before playing their home opener on Tuesday, April 29th at 7:05PM against the Bridgeport Bluefish at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
