Bears Shutout Road Warriors, 8-0

NEWARK, NJ, MAY 16-Three Newark pitchers combined to shut out the Pennsylvania Road Warriors, 8-0, Friday night at Riverfront Stadium. The shutout was the Bears first of the season and first since August 1, 2002.

Tom Stepka (1-1) made his first start of the season for the Bears and tossed six innings of four-hit, no-run ball. Stepka struck out four batters and did not walk any. Alberto Castillo (two innings, 1 hit, 3 strikeouts) and Chris Clark (1 inning, 1 hit, 2 strikeouts) finished off the shutout for Newark.

Danny Clyburn paced the offensive attack for the Bears, going 2-3 with a home run, his 4th of the season, and 4 RBI. Clyburn has now hit safely in 9 consecutive games.

Centerfielder Mike Piercy, a Newark native, was 2-3 with a single, a double, a walk and 2 RBI. He also stole a base as the Bears swiped three bases during the game including one by Rickey Henderson.

The Bears scored three runs in the first inning on Clyburn's home run and then plated four in the fifth inning. All seven of those runs were scored off of losing pitcher (Kevin McClain (0-3).

Newark will play the middle game of this three-game series against the Road Warriors Saturday night at 6:05. Matt Wagner (1-0) will look for his second straight win on the mound for the Bears.
