Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - March 14, 2007 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced the signings of right-handed pitchers Jason DiAngelo and Aaron Ledbetter to contracts for the 2007 season.
DiAngelo, originally a 27th round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2003, has spent four seasons in the Rockies organization. Last season, he joined the Atlantic City Surf of the Atlantic League, appearing in 30 games out of the bullpen, posting a record of 2-1 with six saves, as well as made an appearance in the AL All-Star Game. In 36.2 innings pitched, the 26-year-old Pennsylvania native struck out 44 batters.
Ledbetter reached a contract agreement with the Bears after he was acquired in December of 2006 in a trade with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League. Originally a 24th round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2001 draft, Ledbetter pitched in the Frontier League from 2003 through 2006 and is a two-time Frontier League All-Star. He joined the Wild Things midway through the 2006 season posting a 4-1 record in seven starts, allowing only 12 earned runs in 51 innings pitched. In 2005 with the River City Rascals, the Arkansas native finished third in the league with 12 wins and second with a 2.93 ERA. He finished that season with a career high in wins and strikeouts with 114.
"Last season, we had the opportunity to watch Jason DiAngelo continue to improve and pitch very well in the Atlantic League, and we look for him to do the same this season," said Bears Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operations Jim Cerny. "In addition, Aaron Ledbetter has been a prominent All-Star pitcher in the Frontier League, progressing each season. We are excited to see both pitchers in action when spring training begins in Newark on April 21."
The Newark Bears will begin their ninth season at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, May 8 against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Fans attending all home games may park in the spacious parking garage located behind the wall in right field.
