Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - May 30, 2006 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club began the Memorial Day Weekend, celebration by welcoming the Camden Riversharks to Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium with Bird Flu Awareness Night. The day began with special mentions in The Washington Post and ESPN.com, and continued with a successful chicken wing eating contest.
"We haven't been this excited since Mike Veeck's genius idea to give away a vasectomy on Father's Day..." was the quote from The Washington Post on Friday morning, and "(The Bears) set the new bar for insensitivity and hilarity" is how it read on The Daily Quickie on ESPN.com. Bird Flu Awareness Night began with fans receiving surgical masks when they walked through the gates, and continued with a chicken wing eating contest presented by Planet Wings which took place on the field. Five contestants lined up behind home plate with 20 wings in their plates and a glass of water. The contestant who ate the most wings in three minutes was the winner. Kevin Moxley, the winner of the sloppy joe eating contest in 2004, was victorious after eating 18 wings, winning a gift certificate from Planet Wings.
During the game, Bears' staff members "quarantined" section 106, where visiting team guests sit, by sectioning off the section with caution tape. Anyone with a ticket stub for the section received 25% off at the Bears Merchandise Store located behind home plate. In addition to the night, the Bears received many chicken related food items at the box office, including chicken soup, ramen noodles, etc, which in turn will be donated.
On Saturday, May 28, the Bears welcomed fans to the ballpark with Bark in the Park Night. The first 1,500 fans in the stadium received a FREE bandana presented by E.S.T.I.R. Insurance. While in the stadium, fans were treated to a parade of the 4-H seeing-eye puppy dogs from New Jersey
The Bears will continue to hold special theme nights at The Den, including Newark Eagles Tribute Night on Saturday, July 15, Troy Murphy Night on Friday, July 21, Britney Spears Baby Safety Night on Friday, August 4, and Scientology Night on Friday, August 11.
