NEWARK, NJ - March 31, 2007 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club held their open tryouts for the 2007 season today at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Bears Manager Wayne Krenchicki and Pitching Coach Steve Foucault were both on hand as they evaluated over one hundred players trying out for the team.
The tryouts, which were open to all adults 18 and older, began at 9:00 AM at The Den. Over one hundred players from around the tri-state area attended the tryout and participated in a simulated game.
"With the talent in the area continuing to grow each year, we look forward to this event," said Bears Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operations Jim Cerny. "The tryouts not only give these players another opportunity to open the eyes of professional coaches, but give us the chance of finding a talented player who has been overlooked in the past."
The Bears most respected signing from the open tryouts was left-handed pitcher Steve Crampton who pitched for the team in 2004 and 2005. In 2004, the Paterson, New Jersey native appeared in a team high 46 games and set career highs with six wins and 68 strikeouts en route to being named Bears Pitcher of the Year.
