Bears hire Lipso Nava as hitting coach

NEWARK, NJ - March 26, 2007 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Team announced today Lipso Nava has been hired to the position of Hitting Coach for the 2007 season. Nava, who joins the coaching staff of Manager Wayne Krenchicki and Pitching Coach Steve Foucault, retired following the 2006 season, his 16th in professional baseball, and will be entering his first season as a coach.
"I have watched Lipso Nava play since 1998 and was fortunate enough to have him with Camden Riversharks my final three seasons and again in 2006 with the Bears," said Bears General Manager John Brandt. "During that time Nava showed his tireless work ethic and excellent leadership skills. We look forward to him working with our new coaching staff towards a successful 2007 season."
Last season with the Bears, Nava played in an injury shortened 52 games batting .239 with eight doubles, two triples, and seven home runs. On September 20 against the Riversharks, Nava tied the Bears single-game record of eight RBI set in 1998. After an RBI single in the first inning, Nava hit a game-tying three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Bears a 12-8 victory. Nava finished the season with 31 RBI and 20 runs scored.
Originally drafted in the 14th round of the 1990 draft by the Seattle Mariners, the veteran of over 1,300 games has made it as far as triple-A four times in his career, and has played parts of six seasons in the Atlantic League with the Somerset Patriots, Riversharks, and Bears.
The Newark Bears will begin their ninth season at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, May 8 against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
