Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, N.J. -- Newark dropped a 5-3 decision to Bridgeport Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, ending its three-game season-opening winning streak and snapping its six-game unbeaten streak over the Bluefish. Bridgeport scored all five of its run in the second inning and then fended off a late Bears rally to secure the victory.

In the second inning, the Bluefish (1-3) scored five runs on five hits as Tony Rodriguez connected on a two-run home run and Rolo Avila and Jeremy Booth all had RBI's. Newark pitching then began to cruise, allowing just three hits in the final seven innings as starter Al Hawkins (0-1) and his relief Damon Ponce Deleon and Alberto Castillo managed to keep the Bluefish at bay and give their team a chance to win. Newark (3-1) got on the board in the fourth as Bryan Britt smashed his second round-tripper of the young season. The Bears scored twice more in the fifth on a RBI double by Wil Quintana and a RBI groundout to third by Francisco Lebron. Newark threatened again in the seventh as Rickey Henderson, who pinch hit for Mike Piercy walked and then advanced to third on a single by Jack Santora, had men on first and third with no outs. Bridgeport starter Alex Lantayo (1-0) worked his way out of the jam and then gave way to Mike Guilfoyle who notched his first save of 2002.

For the contest, Newark had eight hits as compared to Bridgeport's nine. The Bears made two errors while the Bluefish committed one. Newark stranded 10 runners opposed to Bridgeport's three in the shortest game of the season (2:44).

The Bears remain in the friendly confines of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium this weekend, as Nashua comes to Newark for a three-game series. Games begin Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7:05 p.m. and Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m.
