Bears Close Out Pre-Season Sched With 11-11 Tie

NEWARK, NJ, Apr. 23-The defending Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears closed out their pre-season schedule by playing to an 11-11 tie against Rutgers-Newark University at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Wednesday evening. Newark was 2-0-1 in the pre-season; and they will open the 2008 regular season Friday night on Long Island against the Ducks.
Four different Bears hit home runs, with designated hitter Cory Aldridge and second-baseman Bobby Hill each blasting their second of the pre-season. Aldridge, who was 2-4 on the night, hit a three-run blast in Newark's four-run first inning. Hill, who was 1-3 with a walk and 2 runs scored, crushed a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
First-baseman Gerard Haran launched a three-run blast in the sixth inning, and finished the game 2-2 with a double and a walk. Catcher John Pachot hit a solo home run in the second inning.
Rutgers-Newark scored five runs in the final frame off of right-hander Chris Rubio to tie the game. Earlier, veteran former Major League right-hander Al Levine was very sharp in his first spring appearance for Newark, inducing three quick ground-ball outs.
The Bears will celebrate the 2007 Atlantic League Championship in a ceremony prior to their 2008 home opener against the Bridgeport Bluefish on Tuesday, April 29 at 7:05 PM.
