Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - March 21, 2007 - The Newark Bears Professional Club announced the signings of right-handed pitcher Delvis Pacheco and infielder Josh Arteaga to contracts for the 2007 season.
Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Atlanta Braves in 1994, Pacheco is entering his tenth professional season and second in the Atlantic League. In 2003, the Venezuelan native pitched for the Camden Riversharks, posting career highs in wins with 10, games pitched with 22, and innings pitched with 147.
Arteaga was drafted in the 20th round of the 2001 draft by the Chicago Cubs and is entering his seventh professional season. He has spent the previous six seasons in affiliated ball, including four seasons at the triple-A level following his college career at Virginia Commonwealth. In 2003, the Florida native set a career high with 34 runs scored while splitting the season between West Tennessee of the Southern League and Iowa of the Pacific Coast League. While splitting the 2004 season between the same two teams, Arteaga hit a career high 20 doubles, and in 2006 he set a career high in games played with 108.
"We are looking forward to watching Delvis and Josh when spring training begins on April 21," said Bears Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operations Jim Cerny. "Both players have excelled at their positions during their career and we have no doubt they will continue to have the same success with the Bears in 2007."
The Newark Bears will begin their ninth season at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, May 8 against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Fans attending all home games may park in the spacious parking garage located behind the wall in right field.
