Newark Bears News Release

Newark, N.J. - The Newark Bears announced today the signing of Fernando Seguignol for the 2010 season. Seguignol has touched nearly every level of professional baseball, both in the United States and out of the country.

"Fernando brings not only tremendous experience to our lineup, but also a great bat," said General Manager R.C. Reuteman. "The team is really starting to take shape and we couldn't more excited to have a player of Fernando's caliber with us this season."

The Panama native brings 16 years of professional baseball experience to the Bears. Seguignol last played in 2008 with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan. He batted .324 with 44 hits, 24 runs and 40 RBI. Seguignol became Japan's All-Time leader in home runs for a switch-hitter as he collected his 44th dinger in 2008. He has amassed 141 career home runs in six seasons playing Japan.

Seguignol enters his first season in the Atlantic League and first in independent baseball. The 35 year-old spent parts of five seasons in the major leagues, most recently with the New York Yankees in 2003. He began his career and spent two seasons with the Yankees before joining the Expos organization, where he stayed for seven seasons. Seguignol holds a.270 average in the minors complimented by 1,523 hits, 295 homers, and 1,012 RBI in 1,586 games. The New York Yankees signed him as an undrafted free agent in 1993.

The Newark Bears are a member of the eight-team Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play their home games at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. For ticket or sponsorship information, call 973-848-1000, or visit www.newarkbears.com.
