TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums have announced a trade with the Amarillo Dillas of the United League that will send pitchers Josh Myers and Matt Lawrence to Traverse City for a player to be named.
Myers is a 6'3" 185-pound right-hander who pitched collegiately at the University of Virginia before being signed by Amarillo at the end of last season. In Amarillo, Myers pitched a complete game shutout in his first professional start and followed it up by pitching 8 innings of 3-run baseball in his next start. His final stat line was 1-0, with a 1.56 ERA in 17.1 innings, with 6 walks, 12 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .215 average.
Myers was equally as effective out of the University of Virginia bullpen during his college career where he compiled a 5-1 record and 1.43 ERA in 50.1 innings, with 19 walks, 44 strikeouts, while only giving up 38 hits. Myers' college career was highlighted by a 0.00 ERA in 16.2 innings his senior year. University of Virginia pitching coach Karl Kuhn described Myers as a "talented pitcher with a great arm, good slider, and a really, really, really deceptive motion."
Lawrence is a 6'0" 200-pound right hander out of Woldorf, Maryland, who was the closer for Bellhaven College. After finishing his career at Bellhaven in 2007, Lawrence signed with the Shreveport Sports of the American Association. In Shreveport, Lawrence had a 1.80 ERA in 5 innings, with 5 walks and 6 strikeouts before being traded to Amarillo. After arriving in Amarillo, Lawrence saw action in 4 games for a total of 7 innings with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .286 average.
"These two pitchers are a great pick-up for our club," said Jason Wuerfel, the Beach Bums' Director of Baseball Operations. "Myers combines a good arm with a quirky motion that keeps hitters off balance, and I expect him to compete for a spot in our starting rotation. Lawrence was the anchor of his pitching staff in college and he has an above average breaking ball; he should help provide depth to our bullpen."
