Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - Tony Barnette's six solid innings on the hill paced the BayBears to an 8-7 victory over the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx tonight at Hank Aaron Stadium. Barnette (1-2) allowed just one run on three hits and tallied four strikeouts.
The BayBears (6-6) held a 7-1 advantage entering the eighth inning but West Tenn (7-5) wouldn't go down quietly as they scored six runs over the final two innings. The scoring started in the second inning as Greg Thomson singled home Cyle Hankerd with the bases loaded against Jaxx starter Rich Dorman (2-1).
The BayBears got to Dorman again in the fifth with the score knotted at 1-1 as Bryan Byrne doubled to get the rally going. Byrne advanced to third on a Cesar Nicolas single and scored on a base hit by Rusty Ryal. John Hester brought Nicolas home with a double and scored on a throwing error by reliever Brodie Downs to put the BayBears in front 4-1.
Three more came home in the sixth as Nicolas nailed a two-run double to bring Thomson and Yunesky Sanchez to the plate. Nicolas scored on a groundout by Hester.
West Tenn began chipping away in the eighth as Adam Moore, Marshall Hubbard and Prentice Redman all drove in runs. After Nicolas ripped a homer in the bottom of the eighth, the BayBears had an 8-4 lead heading for the ninth inning.
Ronnie Prettyman unloaded a long ball to make it 8-5 in the ninth against Reid Mahon. Four straight two-out singles brought two more in for the Jaxx and put the tying run at third with two out, but Mahon rallied to strike out Redman, ending the ballgame.
Hector Ambriz (0-1, 4.76) takes the ball for the BayBears tomorrow night at Hank Aaron Stadium as the BayBears will look to get over .500 for the first time this season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Dial (251) 479-BEAR for tickets or log on to mobilebaybears.com.
