BayBears Announce Coaching Staff for Farewell Season

February 16, 2019 - Southern League (SL) - Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala. - The Los Angeles Angels named their minor league development staff for the 2019 season Saturday morning. This announcement included the field staff for the Mobile BayBears, the Angels Double-A affiliate.

Former BayBears infielder David Newhan will serve as the team's manager for the Farewell Season. This is Newhan's first managerial position, following two years as a minor league infield coordinator for the Angels and two years as an assistant hitting coach for the Detroit Tigers. The Southern California native had an eight-year Major League career with five different teams, and he won a Southern League championship with Mobile in 1998. Newhan spent the entire season with the BayBears, playing in 121 games, before making his Major League debut for the San Diego Padres the following year. His father Ross is a Hall of Fame baseball writer, who covered the sport in the Los Angeles market for 44 years until his retirement in 2004.

The BayBears also welcome a new hitting coach, Matt Spring, who had a 12-year professional baseball career. Spring was a fourth-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Rays and played in 186 Southern League games with Montgomery from 2007-2010. He spent the last five years of his career in the Boston Red Sox organization, reaching Triple-A Pawtucket. Spring has been a hitting coach in the Angels farm system for the past two seasons, with Rookie-level Orem Owlz in 2017 and Burlington in 2018.

Jairo Cuevas will be the BayBears pitching coach this year. Cuevas played six seasons of affiliated baseball in the Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals farm systems, including a short stint in the Southern League with Mississippi in 2008. He has been a pitching coach in the Angels organization since 2015, most recently with the Arizona League Angels and previously with the Class A Burlington Bees.

Dylan Mazzo is a new member of the Angels organization and will be the BayBears defensive coach. Mazzo has been a college baseball assistant at the University of Charleston, East Stroudsburg University, and his alma mater Misericordia University.

Athletic trainer Matt Morrell returns for his third season with the BayBears and fourth with the Angels Double-A affiliate, previously the Arkansas Travelers. Jon Hill will serve as the team's strength and conditioning coach.

The BayBears open the 2019 season at Hank Aaron Stadium on Thursday, April 4, at 6:35 p.m. and host 70 home dates through Labor Day, September 2. Season ticket packages and partial plans are available now, featuring a 7-game plan and a 12-game option that includes tickets to Opening Day, July 4, select fireworks nights, and bobblehead giveaway nights.
