Mobile BayBears News Release
Mobile, AL-- When Major League Baseball announces the 2004 post-season awards it is almost assured that a former BayBear will be honored. After his stellar performance last night, BayBears Hall of Famer Jake Peavy leads not only the National League but all of Major League Baseball in Earned Run Average (2.27). Against the Dodgers Wednesday night, Peavy threw 8 scoreless innings, striking out 11 and allowing only three hits. Jake is scheduled for two more starts in the 2004 regular season (September 28 vs. Giants and October 3 at Arizona.) In those two starts he needs only a total of 7 2/3 innings for a season total of 162 innings, the minimum to qualify for the full season league leaders.
The National League Rookie of The Year is basically a two-man race between former BayBears Khalil Greene and Jason Bay. Khalil was the BayBears shortstop during the 2003 season. The Padres number one draft pick in 2002 (13th overall pick) has hit .273 this season with 15 homeruns and 65 runs batted in. Khalil has also be a highlight reel regular with his outstanding defensive play at shortstop this season.
Jason Bay was a BayBear outfielder during the 2002 season. Bay has hit .290 for the Pirates this season with 24 homeruns and 75 runs batted in. Jason was traded from the Padres to the Pirates in August of 2003. He was dealt from San Diego, along with former BayBears Oliver Perez and Kory Stewart, to Pittsburgh for Brian Giles.
