Bay Sox vs Schooners Recap

June 9, 2017 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The fans at Paul Walsh Field during Friday night's home opener witnessed a rainbow, a full moon hovering over center field, and a thrilling walk-off victory for the New Bedford Bay Sox.

Corey Joyce (North Carolina Central) laced a single down the left field line to score Cody Doyle (Sacred Heart) in the bottom of the tenth inning, as the Bay Sox defeated the Mystic Schooners 5-4.

The Bay Sox loaded the bases with no outs in the tenth, as Doyle was hit by a pitch, Dante Baldelli (Boston College) reached on a sacrifice bunt and an error by losing pitcher Daniel Rajkowski, and pinch hitter Chandler Debrosse walked. Joyce's single gave the Bay Sox their second win of the season, and first victory of the season against the team that eliminated them in the postseason en route to the NECBL title.

Jacob Lamb (Richmond) was outstanding in a lengthy relief outing, picking up the win in his three-inning outing. He struck out five batters while allowing just one hit and one walk, and kept the Schooners off the board during the final three frames of the evening.

The Bay Sox led the contest off with back to back singles from Joyce and Nick Neville (Notre Dame), but Schooners' starting pitcher Robert Potter retired the next three batters with strikeouts. They had two more base runners in the bottom of the second inning, as Doyle and Dante Baldelli drew one-out walks. They moved to second and third on a passed ball, but Potter responded with a flyout preceded by his fifth strikeout in the first two innings.

The Schooners struck for a run in the top of the third, as third-year veteran Nick Mascelli struck a double to right field to plate left fielder Andruw Gazzola. Brent Teller (Sacred Heart) was able to escape the inning with just the one run allowed, earning a strikeout and a groundout that limited the damage.

Teller's offense rewarded him for his efforts in the top of the third, as they pounded out three hits and scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. With one down, catcher Nick Matera (Rutgers - Camden) launched a solo homer to left field for his first run driven in of the young season. Karsten Sherman (Keiser University) followed with a deep drive to straight away center field which was tracked down at the wall by Brian Rey. Luke Bakula (Kansas) singled with two down, and scored on a double by Dan Schock (Sacred Heart) that bounced off the left field wall.

The defending champs from Mystic evened the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth, as right fielder Chris Winkel led off with a double. He was caught in a rundown at third base after a groundout was snagged by Teller, as Terry Bowens Jr. replaced him at second base. After a hit batter, Bowens would score on a single by Matthew O'Neill and an error in right field by Baldelli. Teller got out of the inning by starting an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play.

Teller ran into trouble again in the top of the sixth, as he allowed a leadoff single to Rey and a two-out walk to Vinnie Pallisco. Austin Cline (Dayton) took over with runners on first and second, but stranded the runners with a clutch strikeout. Teller finished the night going 5.2 innings, striking out five while surrendering two runs (one earned), six hits, and two walks.

The home squad knocked three consecutive singles in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Bakula and Schock were both thrown out on the bases. Bakula was too aggressive after his base hit fell between the center fielder and right fielder, and got tagged out trying to return to first base. Schock laced a single down the left field line, but Gazzola made a great throw to gun him down at second base. Doyle struck the third single of the frame, and was joined on the bases by Baldelli after he drew a walk. Nine-hitter Zach Kurtz (Richmond) fanned with runners at second and third.

The Schooners took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, as Mascelli and Crimson Tide sophomore John Trousdale knocked back-to-back RBI doubles off of Cline. The Bay Sox countered with two runs of their own to knot the game at 4-4, with Joyce scoring on a RBI single from Stanley Vargas (New England College), and Sherman scoring from third on a wild pitch from Mystic reliever Adam Goss.

The Bay Sox will next play an exhibition game against the Wareham Gateman of the Cape Cod League on Saturday night at Paul Walsh Field. The game begins at 6:30pm, and is preceded by a Women's All Star Game at 2pm.
