Bay Sox Lose 4-1

July 2, 2015 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

New Bedford - The New Bedford Bay Sox were topped by the Samford Mainers, 4-1 last night at Paul Walsh field in New Bedford.

Howie Brey (Rutgers) had a rough outing for New Bedford, as Mainer hitters hit the ball hard off of him throughout the night.

His 4 1/3rd innings on the mound was his second shortest outing of the season. Samford were able to plate three runs off of Brey with two coming as earned runs. Brey received his third loss of the season, now his overall record stands at 2-3 for New Bedford.

Ben Wessel (Rhode Island) kept the Bay Sox bats muted for most of the night, as he threw 6 2/3 while allowing seven hits and just the one run from New Bedford. He threw 96 pitches while enjoying a little run support on way to his first win of the season.

Cochise College players made their stamp on the game as Nate Stepna and Dan Hetzel would account for two of Samford's four runs.

Stepna led off the second-inning with a screaming double to the right-center gap. Two batters later, Hetzel drove in his college teammate, and now summer teammate, with a double of his own to score the first run of the game for Samford. Stepna finished his night by going 2 for 4 and drove in a runner himself.

Even though the Bay Sox only scored one run, some positives for New Bedford included strong performances at the dish by T.J Dixon, Ted Shaw, and Ryan Baldwin.

T.J Dixon (Samford), the fleet-footed centerfielder, reached base twice by dropping down the bunt and showing his speed, finishing his night 2 for 4 at the plate.

Ted Shaw (Sacred Heart) grounded out his first at-bat, but was difficult the sit down after that, as he had three singles in his final three at-bats of the game. He also stole a base-hit away from Samford with a remarkable play at second base.

Baldwin (Barry) has been seeing the ball well lately and that continued last night, as the former Standard-Times Player of the Year had a 3 for 4 night including a pair of singles and a double, earning him his first stint as First Citizens' Player of the Game.

The Bay Sox return to Paul Walsh tonight for a double header against the Danbury Westerners. This is the second double header between these two Southern Divisional foes. In the first meetings, back on June 20th, the Bay Sox split two with the Westerners.

During Game two of the double header, the New Bedford Bay Sox, in collaboration with the Standard-Times, will honor high school all-stars of baseball and softball from the South Coast.
