Bay Sox Bats Go Silent in 6-0 Loss to Danbury in Game 2 Of
June 26, 2017 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
Brad Case drew the nod for Game 2 of the doubleheader, and made his first start of the season and second appearance of the year after joining the team late. Case had thrown three scoreless innings last Wednesday night in New Bedford's 6-1 loss to the Keene Swamp Bats, but allowed a run in the top of the second. Giovanni Dingcong ripped a one-out double, then moved to third on a fielder's choice to third baseman Luke Bakula (Kansas). Bakula tried to tag out the Westerners' right fielder, but missed the tag. Danbury attempted another double-steal, which was successful in Game 1, but the Bay Sox gunned down Dingcong at home for out number two. Justin Drpich drove in the run with an RBI double to deep right-center field that split outfielders Dante Baldelli (Boston College) and Jordan Fucci (Samford).
Case racked up the strikeouts early on, but when the Westerners weren't striking out, they were smacking hits. They scored three times in the top of the third on four hits, which were sandwiched around three Ks from the righty from Rollins College. Kevin Mohollen and Joe Drpich singled with one out, and Dingcong brought Mohollen home with his own single. With runners on second and third, Javier Valdes Jr. plated both Westerners with yet another base knock.
Case's teammates just could not string together hits in the second game, as they were 0-for-8 with three Ks and three double plays with runners on base. Bakula and Baldelli were the only Bay Sox runners to advance into scoring position on Monday night, with Bakula the lone Sox to reach third base. The Kansas junior was the only Bay Sox with a multi-hit game, as the home team had just six hits in the shutout loss.
Danbury tacked on another run in the sixth, which ended Case's evening. He allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits, with two walks and an impressive 11 strikeouts. His defense did not make matters easier, as they committed four errors, with Corey Joyce (North Carolina Central) collecting three of them at his normal shortstop position.
Joyce also ended his streak of reaching base in 11 consecutive plate appearances with a line out to pitcher Brendan White in the third inning. Joyce was 11 for his last 13 before the line out, and was awarded Player of the Week earlier on Monday.
The Bay Sox dropped to 7-8 with the two losses, and will look to bounce back on Tuesday night as they face the Plymouth Pilgrims at home.
