Charleston Battery News Release

Pittsburgh, PA. The Charleston Battery tied the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1-1 Saturday night at Highmark Stadium in front of 3,464. Jose Cuevas put the Battery in front with an excellent strike late in the first-half but the Riverhounds earned a share of the points after Jose Angulo headed home an equalizer midway through the second period.

With the tie the Battery improves to a record of 7-3-3, 24 points but remains in fourth position in the USL PRO standings.

The Battery started brightly and almost took the lead in the 4th minute after Zach Prince slipped the ball through to forward Dane Kelly on the right side of the box. Kelly ran onto the pass and hit a sharp first-time shot that zipped high and wide.

Pittsburgh fought back and forced Battery goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper into action in the 27th minute. Midfielder Kevin Karr found himself free twenty yards out as Pittsburgh broke on the counter-attack. Kerr drilled a dipping shot on target but Cooper managed to tip the ball over the bar.

The Battery took the lead in the 37th minute after defender Emmanuel Adjetey found Jose Cuevas with a short pass across the halfway line. Cuevas dribbled the ball forward and as the Riverhounds defense approached he curled a right-footed shot into the top corner beating goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap.

Charleston almost scored another with a terrific flowing move at the end of the half. Cuevas drove a diagonal pass across the field to Zach Prince at the edge of the box. Prince cushioned a volley inside to Nicki Paterson whose reaction header just missed wide of the right goal post.

Pittsburgh enjoyed more of the ball after the break as they pressured for an equalizer. Cooper made a terrific save in the 64th minute denying Angulo from point blank range with a reaction save. Five minutes later though Angulo received a chance and slipped his header into the far corner to equalize.

Both teams had opportunities in the closing minutes but neither was able to break through and find a winner.

The Battery takes on the Rochester Rhinos Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. as it concludes its North-East road swing (Sports Radio 1450 WQNT).
