Charleston Battery News Release
Rochester, NY. The Charleston Battery tied the Rochester Rhinos 0-0 Friday night at Marina Auto Stadium in front of 6,795. Forward Randi Patterson led the way with three shots but could not find a finish to score the crucial goal. Battery goalkeeper Keith Wiggans recorded three saves en route to the shut-out.
The Battery started brightly and came close in the 3rd minute. The ball was worked out to forward Darren Spicer on the left side of the box. Spicer stepped to the left of his defender but pulled his shot just wide of the far post.
Charleston continued to press and in the 19th minute earned a free-kick at the edge of the box after forward Randi Patterson was fouled. Midfielder Tyler Hemming took the kick but saw his curling right-footed shot crash back off the bar.
The best chance of the half came in the 42nd minute after a neat through ball sent Patterson past the last defender. Patterson slipped his shot to the left of goalkeeper Scott Vallow but Vallow managed to scuff the ball wide with his trailing leg.
In the 69th minute Rochester substitute Amaury Nunes forced Wiggans into action with a hard shot from the edge of the box. Wiggans got across quickly and made the save at the far post.
Rochester had a second chance in the 87th minute but defender Kenny Bertz's slip header came back of the underside of the bar. Wiggans reacted the fastest and managed to gather the loose ball.
The Battery had a chance to win it in stoppage-time after substitute forward Dan Antoniuk set the ball back to midfielder Kenji Treschuk. Treschuk took a touch to control the ball then hit a hard volley that just missed wide right.
The Battery concludes regular season play this Sunday in Blaine, MN with a 6:05 PM match versus the Minnesota Thunder (SportsRadio 1450AM).
The Battery begins its post-season campaign on the road next Thursday against an as yet to be determined opponent. Charleston will host the deciding match of the first-round playoff series at Blackbaud Stadium on Sunday, September 27, 7 PM (FOX Soccer Channel).
