Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery has agreed to terms with forward Amaury Nunes and midfielder Alioune Gueye for the 2010 USL season. Nunes is a native of Rio de Janeiro Brazil and comes to the Battery from the Charlotte Eagles where he scored nine goals in 12 games in 2009. Gueye is a native of Senegal and played for the Cleveland City Stars last year. Both players sign pending USSF approval.

Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser commented "Alioune is a central midfield player that we saw last year with Cleveland. He is a player that can stop teams from playing while bringing a quality and strength to the midfield to help the team win. He will add to our depth in the center midfield position and we look forward to him having a successful season in 2010."

"Amaury is a natural goal-scorer who I first came in contact with while he was at Fresno in the PDL. He had a successful season after coming back from injury with Charlotte last season and we know he will do the same in Charleston. He has the ability to score goals and is always a threat when he is on the field. We are very pleased to have Amaury join the Battery attack in 2010."

"Both players bring experience and quality to our roster."

Nunes, 6-0, 170 lbs, 27 yrs., grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and was a part of the youth setup at famed Brazilian club Flamengo as a teenager. Nunes relocated to the United States in 2004 to attend college.

Nunes played four years of college soccer, initially at Oklahoma Baptist University, and then at Fresno Pacific University. He scored 17 goals in 16 games for FPU as a sophomore in 2005; in 2007 he scored 22 goals in 22 games, and was named 1st team NAIA All-American.

During his college years Nunes also played for the Fresno Fuego in the USL Premier Development League, helping the team to the PDL Southwest Division and Western Conference titles in 2007, while scoring 32 goals in 44 games during his four years with the team.

Alioune Gueye

A native of Ziguinchor, Senegal Alioune Gueye joined Cleveland in May last year and played 21 games for the City Stars logging 1,552 minutes and scoring one goal.

Prior to Cleveland Gueye, 5-5, 160 lbs., 23 yrs., played for Dolphins FC in the Nigerian First Division (2008-2009). He also played previously with Casa-Sport of the Senegal Premier League.
