Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery returns to USL1 action this Saturday night with a 7:30 PM match versus the Carolina RailHawks at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island ($10 - $18, (843) 971-GOAL (4625) / www.charlestonbattery.com). The Battery (8-2-6, 30 points) enters the game in first place in the USL First Division; Charleston's last league match was a 1-0 away win versus the Montreal Impact in a game played last Sunday afternoon.
Former Montreal forward Dan Antoniuk scored the decisive goal for the Battery in Montreal converting a cross from Scott Buete in the 68th minute. Goalkeeper Dusty Hudock recorded seven saves to earn his league-leading 10th shutout of the season.
The Charleston Battery is unbeaten at Blackbaud Stadium in USL1 matches so far in 2009 and has been very sound defensively conceding only two goals.
This is the second match of the year versus the RailHawks; the Battery defeated Carolina by a score of two goals to one in a game played in Cary, NC back on May 9. Former RailHawks Frankie Sanfilippo and Dan Antoniuk scored the goals for Charleston.
Carolina (7-4-3, 24 points) is currently in fourth position in the USL First Division, the RailHawks last match was a 2-1 loss versus the Puerto Rico Islanders on June 27.
Carolina's roster underwent a complete overhaul during the off-season with new head coach Martin Rennie bringing in an almost entirely new squad; only four players remain from the 2008 season. Former Charleston Battery forwards Gavin Glinton and Aaron King were among the players signed.
Dusty Hudock named USL First Division Player of the Week
Charleston Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock has been named the USL First Division Player of the Week following his excellent performance in last weekend's 1-0 win versus the Montreal Impact. Hudock recorded seven saves en route to his 10th shut-out of the season. Hudock leads the league in wins (8), shut-outs (10) and GAA (0.215).
A native of Phoenix, AZ, Hudock has twice earned USL First Division Goalkeeper of the Year honors (1997, 2002); Hudock was a member of the Battery's 2003 Championship winning team and was a two-time All American at the University of Washington in 1992 and 1993 and led the nation in GAA in 1992.
