Charleston Battery News Release
The Charleston Battery kicks off its 15th season this Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium with an 8 PM match versus the Minnesota Thunder. The game is a re-match of the 2003 USL First Division Championship game (the Battery won 3-0 behind goals from Paul Conway, Steve Klein & Ted Chronopoulos). Dusty Hudock and Mark Watson are the only players left from the 2003 game.
Charleston Battery Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser was an assistant for that game, current Minnesota Thunder Head Coach Amos Magee played for the Thunder in the match.
Mike Anhaeuser is the longest serving player / coach in Battery history. He will be celebrating the start of his 14th season with Charleston on Friday night. Anhaeuser played for the Battery from 1994 - 1999 - was an assistant coach from 2000 - 2004 - took over the Head Coach role in 2005.
In 2006 the Charleston Battery were knocked out of the USL First Division semifinals by eventual runners-up the Rochester Raging Rhinos. The Minnesota Thunder failed to qualify for the playoffs.
The Battery faced the Thunder twice last season; the teams played to a 2-2 tie in Charleston, the Battery earned a 1-0 win in the return match played in Minnesota.
(If he plays) Goalkeeper Dusty Hudock will start his 204th game for Charleston on Friday night (1st all time).
To celebrate the start of the club's 15th season fan's will receive a free schedule cup and a free magnetic schedule at the turnstiles. The evening also features the debut of the Charleston Battery Dance Team, the Bombshells.
The Charleston Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet will perform the National Anthem.
Immediately following the game there will be a Fireworks display by Zambelli Fireworks - the same company that orchestrated the opening of the new Cooper River Bridge.
Friday nights' game is being broadcast LIVE on FOX Soccer Channel.
SC vs NC High School Soccer Games The Charleston Battery will host the South Carolina vs North Carolina Boys and Girls High School Soccer games this July at Blackbaud Stadium; there will an official announcement of this event at the game on Friday in addition to the release of the rosters.
