 Charleston Battery News Release
Pittsburgh, PA. The Charleston Battery were held to a 0-0 tie by the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Saturdaynight at Highmark Stadium in front of 3,096. Both teams had good chances but in the end defense held sway leaving the Battery and the Riverhounds both still looking for their first win of the 2014 USL PRO season.
Charleston Battery goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper faced seven shots and made three saves as he recorded his first shut-out of the year.
The Battery started well and created the first chance of the game in the 4th minute after forward Omar Salagado broke a tackle on the left side. Salgado hit a shot from just outside the box but the strike rose over the bar.
In the 17th minute Charleston threatened again working the ball to striker Haviel Cordoves just outside the box. Cordoves cut inside onto his left foot but his hard driven shot was saved well by Pittsburgh goalkeeper Mike Lisch.
The game opened up after the break with both teams pressing to find a winner. Pittsburgh's best chance of the match came in the 48th minute with the ball set across to midfielder Kevin Kerr twenty yards out. Kerr drilled a shot towards the left side of the goal but Cooper stretched out his frame and pushed the ball away to safety.
Cooper was in action again in the 72nd minute tipping Rob Vincent's left-footed effort wide of the post and for the remaining twenty minutes the Battery back-four defended resolutely to deny Pittsburgh quality chances.
The Charleston Battery takes on the Rochester Rhinos on Sunday afternoon at Sahlen's Stadium, Rochester, NY; kick off is set for 4:05 PM (ESPN radio 910 AM).
