Battery Faces Wilmington in Final Challenge Cup Match

Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery takes on the Wilmington Hammerheads, Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium (6:00 PM) in the Battery's final game of the 2004 Carolina Challenge Cup. The Carolina Challenge Cup is a four-team round-robin tournament that also features Major League Soccer's DC United and the Columbus Crew. Immediately following the Battery game DC United plays Columbus Crew in the second game of the doubleheader.

Charleston Battery vs Wilmington Hammerheads - 6 pm

The match features the 2003 A-League Champions vs. the 2003 PSL Champions in an all USL battle. Both teams are looking for their first victory of the 2004 Carolina Challenge Cup.

The Battery lost 2-1 to DC United in its first game and then dropped 3-1 to the Crew in the second match, last Wednesday night. Both Charleston goals were scored by veteran forward, Paul Conway. Wilmington has yet to score a goal in the tournament, losing its first game to the Crew 2-0 and to DC 1-0 on a PK.

The Charleston Battery's defense of its 2003 A-League Nation Championship begins on the road, April 17 vs. longtime rival, the Richmond Kickers. The 2004 Home Opener is April 24 at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island also vs. the Kickers; kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.

Columbus Crew vs DC United - 8:15 pm

This is the first time that two sides from Major League Soccer have met at Blackbaud Stadium. The Columbus Crew enters the game leading the tournament standings on goal difference. A win or a tie Saturday night will secure them the 2004 Carolina Challenge Cup.

14-year old soccer phenom Freddy Adu is expected to play in Saturday's match. Adu scored his first professional goal for DC united last weekend vs. the Charleston Battery.
