Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery came from behind twice to overcome the Portland Timbers by a score of three goals to two Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,317. Stephen Armstrong scored the winner in the 78th minute to lift Charleston into third position in the USL First Division.

Portland started the game brightly and took the lead in the 21st minute after the Battery conceded a free-kick twenty yards out. Hugo Cuellar's shot squirted through the wall and forward Luke Kraemelmeyer tucked the loose ball away from just inside the six.

Five minutes later the Battery drew level after midfielder Omar Daley slipped a pass through veteran defender Gavin Wilkinson's legs. Gavin Glinton controlled the ball then fired into the bottom-right corner of the goal from just outside the penalty-area.

Portland regained the lead in the 46th minute when midfielder Byron Alvarez squared the ball to Kraemelmeyer inside the box. Kraemelmeyer ran onto the pass and lashed a shot past Charleston goalkeeper Dusty Hudock and into the goal.

The Battery tied the game again in the 55th minute after Ian Fuller was brought down in the box by goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin. Ben Hollingsworth stepped up to take the ensuing PK and drove it into the right corner of the goal.

Portland switched goalkeepers shortly thereafter but the substitute, Josh Saunders, was unable to prevent Stephen Armstrong from scoring the winner. Armstrong ran onto a Daley through-ball in the 78th minute, rounded Saunders then stroked the ball home from an extremely acute angle on the left side.
