Battery Captures 2003 Southern Derby

Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery has captured the 2003 Southern Derby, topping Southeast Division rivals the Atlanta Silverbacks and the Charlotte Eagles. The Southern Derby is a fan organized cup competition that runs simultaneously to the A-League season. This is the first time the Battery has won the Southern Derby in the 4 years of its existence.

Designated A-League matches double as Southern Derby games, each team plays the other twice, once home and once away. Charleston's 2-2 tie with Atlanta on Saturday night clinched the Cup for the Battery.

There will be a Southern Derby trophy presentation prior to the Battery's Tuesday night game with the Virginia Beach Mariners at Blackbaud Stadium.

Charleston Battery vs Virginia Beach Mariners

The A-League Charleston Battery takes on its Southeast Division rival the Virginia Beach Mariners Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 pm. Charleston enters the game in first place in the Southeast Division with a record of 12-5-6, 42 points. Virginia Beach is in third place with a record of 10-8-4, 34 points but has played one game less than Charleston.

Virginia Beach played a back-to-back series with the second place Richmond Kickers last weekend. Both games ended in ties. Friday in Richmond the match finished 1-1, then Saturday night in Virginia Beach the game finished scoreless.

The Mariners offence is led by two former US National Team strikers Roy Lassiter and Dante Washington. Washington is enjoying a stellar season and is currently third in scoring in the A-League with 31 points (15 goals, 1 assist).

This is the fourth and final match scheduled between these two Clubs in the 2003 regular season. The Mariners hold a 2-1 lead in the series having defeated Charleston twice in games played at Virginia Beach. Charleston defeated the Mariners 3-1 in a game played at Blackbaud Stadium on May 3.
