Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the Dayton Dutch Lions by a score of one goal to none on Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,111. Nicki Paterson scored the crucial goal, converting a penalty-kick in the 60th minute.
With the win the Battery improves to 8-5-6 and moves into sole possession of sixth position in the USL PRO standings.
The game was very even in the first half with both sides sparring for chances. The Battery's first look at goal came in the 24th minute as Paterson scuffed a shot wide of the right post.
Dayton fought back and came close two minutes later as Joel DeLass was unmarked at the back post from a corner kick. DeLass met the cross but his header was saved by Odisnel Cooper.
Cody Ellison had a chance for the Battery on the stroke of half time as the ball sat up for him ten yards out after a poor Dayton clearance from a corner. Ellison drilled a volley on target but goalkeeper Matt Williams clawed the shot away to safety.
The game changed on the hour mark after Jose Cuevas played a ball over Dane Kelly's shoulder from the right side. Kelly cushioned the pass as he drove into the box but was brought down by a Dayton defender drawing the penalty kick.
Paterson converted with a curling right-foot finish to take his season tally to a team best six goals.
Dayton threw everything at the Battery in the late going but Charleston led by the solid work of Odisnel Cooper held firm for the victory.
The Charleston Battery is back at Blackbaud Stadium next Wednesday night for a 7:30 PM match versus the Phoenix FC Wolves (Sports Radio 1450 AM).
