Bats Star Holds Summer Camp
June 13, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Austin Ice Bats News Release
Austin Ice Bats winger Dan Price will be the lead instructor at a series of summer ice hockey camps, starting Sunday, June 22nd. The camps will take place at Chaparral Ice Center, I-35 just south of Wells Branch Parkway.
Skills development clinics will be held June 23rd through the 27th, focusing on hockey fundamentals such as power skating, passing, puck handling and shooting. Simultaneous sessions for 6-10 year-old, and for 11-15 year-old players, will take place from 8am to 3pm daily.
Special goaltending clinics will also be held on the 22nd, 23rd and 25th. Those sessions are open to goalies of all ages and skill levels, and will focus on the abilities to stop, control and play the puck.
And adult players in high school or adult hockey leagues will have their own sessions, from 7-9pm on the 22nd, 24th and 26th. Those clinics will feature instruction on both individual skills and team hockey concepts.
Price, who recently concluded his fourth pro season with the Ice Bats, was the Central Hockey League's top scorer in 2001-02. He says the clinics are a way to improve the skills of hockey players throughout the Austin area.
"Camps like ours are the best way to continue the growth of our sport in this area," Price said. "There are other pre-season hockey camps that focus a lot on conditioning prior to the start of the youth season. We wanted to focus our sessions on improving the various skill levels.
"As instructors, we not only get the satisfaction of watching players improve, but for myself, I gain valuable experience for a potential career in coaching," Price said.
Along with Price, other camp instructors include Nathan Bowen, Assistant Coach at the Division 1 level with the University of Alabama-Huntsville; Steve Briere, a three-year pro goalie, who has played largely in the ECHL and in Scotland; and Dwayne Blais, a two-year pro center, who appeared last year with Baton Rouge and Mississippi in the ECHL.
Open registration for the camps will be held this Sunday, June 15th, from 9am to 5pm at Chaparral Ice Center. Price will be on hand to personally sign players up for the sessions. For more information on the camps, contact Chaparral Ice, at (512) 252-8500.
The 2003-04 Central Hockey League season begins October 16th, with the Ice Bats in defense of their Southeast Division and Governors' Cup titles. The team's complete game schedule is expected to be released in July.
Season tickets for the upcoming season are on sale now at the Ice Bats office, with no price increase from last season. Free Belfry Club membership is still included for all new full season packages, as well as free parking for all full-season and half-season plans.
