Louisville Bats News Release
The Louisville Bats offense exploded early to back another strong start from Ben Wereski, beating the Indianapolis Indians 7-1 on Thursday night at Victory Field.
Leading off the second, Ivan Johnson ambushed a 1-0 offering from Indians starter Noah Davis and crushed it 409 feet over the right field for his 11th home run of the season, a solo shot to put the visitors ahead. An inning later, a two-out rally got the Bats gave them some breathing room. Francisco Urbaez kept the inning alive with a single. Leo Balcazar then doubled to the gap in left-center, allowing Urbaez to come all the way home with the Bats' second run. Juan Brito followed with a two-run blast to right, his second Bats home run and 11th overall this season, again doubling the Louisville lead to 4-0.
The Indians got a run off Wereski in the third, but the comeback attempt was quickly thwarted by another Bats rally in the fourth. A walk, an error, and a single loaded the bases in the third with one out. Dominic Pitelli cashed in, powering a double that bounced off the right field wall to score two more runs. Urbaez capped the rally with an RBI single,
For the second straight start, Wereski was stellar. He allowed just one run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts to earn his second consecutive victory in a quality start.
In relief, Connor Phillips struck out five over two scoreless innings and Hunter Parks wrapped up the two-hitter with a scoreless ninth. Eight of the nine Louisville starters recorded at least one hit. Brito and Pitelli were the only Bats to record more than one RBI as the Bats earned their second win in three games to start the series against the first-place Indians.
Next Game: Friday, August 21, 7:05 p.m. E.T. at Indianapolis Indians (Triple-A Affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates)
Probable Pitchers: Both teams' starting pitchers will be announced closer to first pitch on Friday night.
