Baseball Great Lee Smith to Drop Ball at Friday's Sting Game

GLENDALE, AZ --- The Arizona Sting announced today that the ceremonial ball drop at Friday night's game versus the Edmonton Rush will be performed by baseball great Lee Smith.

Smith pitched for 18 seasons in the Major Leagues as a member the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, California Angels, Cincinnati Reds, and Montreal Expos. Over the course of his career, he compiled 71 wins, a 3.03 earned run average, 1251 strikeouts, and a Major League record 478 saves. A seven time All-Star, Smith led the majors in saves four times during his career and was a member of two divisional champions. Lee is currently a pitching coach in the San Francisco Giants organization and is a member of South Africa's coaching staff at the inaugural World Baseball Classic.

Friday night's Sting game is a rematch of last weekend's game won by the Sting 15-11 at Rexall Place in Edmonton. A second consecutive win over the expansion Rush will tie Arizona for first place in the NLL's West Division.
