Pensacola Barracudas News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. â Pensacola Barracudas' assistant head coach Ed Cunningham has been selected as the color commentator for the Arena Bowl XVI set to air live August 18 on ABC-TV.
Cunningham will team with play-by-play announcer Tim Brandt for the broadcast.
"Personally I am honored that ABC chose me to work such a high-profile game," Cunningham said. "And the publicity will only help promote af2, the Barracudas and the city of Pensacola."
The game will mark Cunningham's second broadcast of the Arena Bowl having previously broadcasted Arena Bowl XIV. This year's game will be played in the home arena of the highest-seeded team in the league. Currently San Jose is a perfect 11-0, while Arizona is 8-3.
Cunningham will also partner with Brandt for ABC's coverage of college football this season, focusing mainly on the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big East. His first assignment of the season will come in Blacksburg, Va., when LSU visits Virginia Tech.
Prior to working at ABC, Cunningham spent three seasons at CBS as a color analyst for the network's regional college football telecasts. He was also the analyst for the Arizona Rattlers of the AFL for five seasons and was the color commentator for TNN's Arena Football League coverage.
He also has extensive radio experience, hosting "On the Line with Ed Cunningham" and weekly Sunday evening sports talk shows on KTAR radio in Phoenix.
Cunningham, 32, played five seasons in the National Football League, four with the Arizona Cardinals and his final year with the Seattle Seahawks. He played in college at the University of Washington where he was a captain for the Huskies' 1991 National Championship team. While at UW, he was an All-Pac 10 selection, as well as a second-team All-American and a two-time Academic All-American.
The Barracudas are in action Saturday when Macon comes to the Pensacola Civic Center. Pensacola, 6-6 this season, will welcome its former coach Kevin Porter, whose Knights are 11-2 on the year.
It is "Cable Bill Night" at the Tank with fans who present their local cable bill at the Civic Center box office receiving a $9 ticket for half price. It is also Nextel's "Take a Bite out of Hunger Night" with American flag fans presented to all who donate a canned food item at the door to the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. For ticket information, call 432-7825.
