Mahoning Valley Phantoms News Release
Cleveland, Ohio (Sunday, December 12, 2004) -- This afternoon, the Cleveland Barons got two goals each from John Goebel and Nick Kosinski as they defeated the Youngstown Phantoms, 5-1, in North American Hockey League action at Lakefront Coliseum. Youngstown (16-8-2, 34 points) dropped both ends of this weekend's home-and-home series with Cleveland after taking over sole possession of first place in the NAHL's North Division with three consecutive victories last weekend.
Youngstown's only goal today was scored by Aaron Rhyner at the 7:20-mark of the opening period. It was the team-leading 17th goal of the season for Rhyner, but the Barons were up 2-1 after the first 20 minutes of play. Goebel's second tally of the day increased that lead to 3-1 at 10:57 of the second period, and Kosinski picked up his goals during the final period, one at the 6:01-mark and the other -- an empty-netter -- at 18:54. Kosinski also registered two goals in the third period on Saturday night as Cleveland bounced back from a 3-0 deficit and defeated Youngstown, 5-3. After the second period on Saturday, the Phantoms were outscored, 10-1, by the Barons the rest of the weekend despite the fact that they fired 38 shots at Cleveland goaltender Blake McNicol this afternoon.
Cleveland (10-14-3, 23 points) began the weekend in sixth (last) place in the NAHL North and had lost four of the previous five games with the Phantoms before Saturday. Despite the disappointing weekend, Youngstown remains in first place because the second-place U.S. National Team dropped back-to-back road games against the Soo Indians this weekend, losing 3-1 on Friday night and then 6-1 on Saturday night. Last weekend (December 3-5), Youngstown defeated the U.S. National Team at The Ice Zone in Boardman on Friday night and Saturday night and also downed Cleveland on the road on Sunday.
The Phantoms will play four more games prior to Christmas and all of them are home games. Youngstown will host the Toledo Ice Diggers at The Ice Zone on Tuesday, December 14 and then the Soo Indians will come to town for a pair of games on Friday, December 17 and Saturday, December 18. The final game before the holiday will be Wednesday, December 22 when the Ice Diggers again visit. Opening face-off for all four contests is set for 7:00 p.m. and tickets are available by calling (330) 965-7500 or visiting The Ice Zone, which is located at 360 McClurg Road. Tickets are also available at the door on game nights.
