Bandits defenseman fined for High-Sticking Incident
January 13, 2005 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release
The National Lacrosse League has completed its review of incidents that took place duing the games of Week #2 of the regular season (January 7th-8th). Buffalo Bandits defenseman Billy Dee Smith was fined an undisclosed sum as a result of his involvement in a high-sticking incident last week. Smith received a game misconduct penalty after being called for a high-sticking major penalty against Toronto Rock forward Colin Doyle in the 4th Quarter of their game on January 7th. Doyle was injured on the play and did not return to the game following the incident.
By league rules, a major high-sticking penalty that leaves the other player injured warrants an automatic game misconduct and fine. Also by league rules, any player who incurs two game misconducts for high-sticking over the course of the regular season or playoffs will automatically be suspended for the next game of his team. Therefore, Smith would be suspended if he were to incur another high-sticking game misconduct penalty at any point during the remainder of the 2005 regular season or Champion's Cup Playoffs.
In other discipline, Calgary forward Jesse Phillips (fighting and charging) and San Jose goaltender Anthony Cosmo (illegal equipment) each received game misconduct penalties during games last weekend.
The league will announce its weekly summary of discipline from the previous weekend's games on Thursday's throughout the season.
