Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL-Jeremiah Piepkorn scored three times as the Fargo-Moorehead RedHawks beat the Schaumburg Flyers 4-1 at Alexian Field in front of 7,567 fans.

The RedHawks got the scoring started in the top of the second with a Piepkorn solo home run. It was the first hit given up by Flyers starter Ryan Gehring of the night.

Picking up the action back in the fourth, a one-out walk to Piepkorn was followed by a solid single by Alan Rick. A walk to Carlo Cota loaded the bases, and Justin Justice delivered with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0. Gehring limited the damage by getting Coles to ground out, ending the inning.

The Flyers bats finally got to RedHawks starter Garry Bakker in the fifth. A Felix Jose walk was followed by a Mercado double. Tony Mansolino delivered with a RBI ground to get the Flyers on the board.

The top of the sixth was kicked off with a Piepkorn single, and a Rick base hit put runners on the corners with one out. An RBI single by Cota followed, making it a 3-1 game. Justice kept the line moving for the RedHawks with a base hit to right, but a terrific throw by Victor Ferrante caught the streaking Rick in a rundown, eventually being called out sliding back into third. Another ground out by Coles ended the inning for the RedHawks.

The Flyers best shot to get back into the game came in the seventh. A double by DH Felix Jose got the inning started, and speedy Craig Maddox came on to run for the 44-year old veteran. A walk to Jeff Dunbar kept the line moving, and Richard Mercado followed by dropping a sac bunt to move the runners over to second and third with just one out. With Mansolino at the plate, a pitch got away from catcher Rick, prompting Maddox to try and score from third. RedHawks starter Bakker broke for home and a quick toss by Rick was all that was needed to get Maddox at home. With two outs, Mansolino flew out to end the inning.

The RedHawks got an insurance run in the ninth as Justin Justice delivered an RBI triple to score Cota, who reached on a base hit up the middle.

Flyers starter Ryan Gehring pitched well in the effort, covering 7.1 innings, while giving up six hits, three earned runs, striking out two while walking five.

For the RedHawks, right hander Garry Bakker went eight strong innings, giving up three hits and striking out four, walking three.
