OTTAWA – Joe Paopao, who has guided the Ottawa Renegades football club as head coach for its first three seasons of existence in the Canadian Football League, inked a one-year contract extension (plus an option) Friday to remain with the team.

A little over 36 months since joining the Renegades, Paopao also was named Ottawa's General Manager.

"I am excited about the opportunity and am glad to be back" said Paopao, a native of Honolulu entering his 27th year in the CFL (11 as a player, 16 as coach). "We are enthusiastic about getting back to work and I'm looking forward to the 2005 season."

Paopao brings continuity to the Renegades football operations and the Ottawa sidelines. He takes over from Eric Tillman as the team's General Manager.

"This is an important day for our franchise and we are pleased, and proud, to have Joe returning to the team," said Renegades president Brad Watters. "Joe has been a pivotal part of this franchise since year one. He has a great rapport with the players, and is widely respected throughout the community and the Canadian Football League."

Paopao has handled coaching and personnel duties in the past. The former pro quarterback known as The "Throwin' Samoan" was previously a head coach with the B.C. Lions in 1996 and was named Director of Football Operations for the Renegades last year.

A father of four, Paopao is married to Dottie. The nation's capital is where Paopao played 13 games of the 1987 season during his professional career. Ottawa is where the husband and wife live year-round.
