Austin Aztex News Release

Three points from Sunday night's victory over Crystal Palace Baltimore at House Park shot the Austin Aztex into first place in the USSF D-2 Pro League table for the first time in the club's brief history.

Jamie Watson, who leads the team in goals scored, blasted the shot that gave the Aztex (4-1-1) the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute off a pass from first-year forward Maxwell Griffin. Griffin's assist came on a cross from the right side of the box that narrowly missed a few other feet to find its way to Watson who left no doubt on the shot past the Crystal Palace (1-4-1) goalkeeper.

The Aztex then salted away the remaining 20 minutes of the game while controlling possession and limiting Baltimore's offensive chances.

J. Watson nearly set up another goal early in the first half on a bicycle kick coming off of Lance Watson's free kick. Lawrence Olum received the pass and headed it into the goal, but it was immediately called back for offsides.

Austin then got on the board and made it stick in the 36th minute on another goal from an Aztex defender - this time L. Watson -- with an assist by forward Eddie Johnson.

Crystal Palace struck back with speed as it had tried to do so many times in the game, this time capitalizing on a long pass from goalkeeper Evan Bush that found the feet of Mathew Mbuta.

Austin now has 13 points on the year, moving it past Rochester for the league lead. The Aztex next game is a rematch with Tampa Bay, who they drew with on the road just two weeks ago.
