Aztex play host to top Mexican side in exhibition match
October 7, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas - To conclude its first full professional soccer season in Austin, the Austin Aztex FC wrap up play in the United States with an exhibition tonight against Club de Futbol Monterrey, which currently sits second in Primera Division de Mexico.
After playing three MLS teams in pre-season exhibitions (New England Revolution, Houston Dynamo and Columbus Crew) as well as hosting a pair of U.S. Open Cup games earlier in the season, Austin faces its first Mexican professional side in Monterrey.
Austin Head Coach Adrian Heath said he is looking forward to his team playing such a quality opponent.
"We didn't finish as well as we had hoped in our first season in the USL-1, but tonight will give our players a chance to see how they match up against a squad in Monterrey that is playing top-class football in Mexico. This will also be a good tune-up for our exhibition games next week in the U.K."
Following tonight's contest the Aztex will resume training in preparation for the three games the team will play starting next week in England, the first time a USL-1 team has ever played in Europe. On October 14 the Aztex will take on Stoke City, the English Premier League side that is the official affiliate of the Aztex. On Thursday, October 15 the Aztex take on League Two side Accrington Stanley and then conclude the three-game English tour with a match on Tuesday, October 20 against Sheffield Wednesday.
Kickoff for tonight's contest against Monterrey is set for 7:30pm at the Round Rock ISD Athletic Complex.
