Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas - After opening the inaugural 2009 USL-1 season with a 1-1 draw against the Minnesota Thunder on Saturday night, the Austin Aztex FC return to action Tuesday looking to get the franchise's first victory and the full three points against the USL-1 defending champion Vancouver Whitecaps who come to town with an 0-1-1 record.
For the Aztex FC, Tuesday's game is an opportunity to build off a solid second-half performance against the Thunder in which the home side fell behind early in the half before responding with a couple of key substitutions that resulted in a goal and a steady offensive attack the remainder of the contest that almost pulled off the storybook come-from-behind finish. Against the defending champs, head coach Adrian Heath said he believes the game will be "a good test and show us where we stand in the pecking order of the league."
While the Whitecaps are the reigning champs, the team hasn't found its winning form yet. The Whitecaps arrive in Austin with two games under their belt and only one point to show for head coach Teitur Thordarson and his squad. After an opening scoreless draw at home against the Charleston Battery, Vancouver went on the road for a rematch of last year's USL-1 championship against the Puerto Rico Islanders on Saturday night. The Whitecaps got off to a great start at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium taking a 1-0 lead just three minutes in to the contest before the Islanders answered with two goals from former Whitecaps striker Nicholas Addlery in the first half. Despite several quality offensive chances in the second half, neither team managed to find the net and the Islanders, a team which played the Aztex to a scoreless draw several weeks earlier in Austin, came away with a 2-1 victory.
Kickoff at Nelson Field is set for 7:30pm.
