Austin Aztex News Release

AUSTIN, Texas (www.austinaztex.com) - The Austin Aztex were able to add another tally to the win total after the Yordany Alvarez's goal in the 80th minute propelled the Aztex over the Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 in what was an extremely intense and physical game last night at House Park.

The Aztex (7-1-2) go ahead goal happened after a pass from Joey Worthen went screaming across the box to Alvarez. It first appeared as if the Aztex midfielder wouldn't be able to get a shot off until he was able to push himself up off the ground and send a shot past the Puerto Rico Islander's (2-4) goalkeeper William Gaudette.

The Aztex looked destined to get a goal during a stretch of the 60th minute but came up just short.

Aztex midfielder Michael Callahan was sprung onto a through ball deep in the Islander goal box and almost got a foot to it until Gaudette was able to quickly get off his line and knock it away.

Shortly after, Aztex defender Leonard Griffin took a free kick from the corner of the Islander goal box and put it just inside the six yard box. Unfortunately, no Austin attacker was able to get a body part on it and put the ball on goal.

Puerto Rico really got their minds in an attacking mode early in the second half pushing the ball forward with little flicks to oncoming attackers. One such attempt was stopped quickly by Aztex goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo and the other was sent sailing over the crossbar by an Islander attacker.

However, the Aztex defense was able to stay sturdy for the beginning of the second half.

Much of first-half action stayed in the middle of the field as both teams seemed content to try and keep the ball in order to advance into the attacking third.

One of the more exciting attempts came about 15 minutes into the match when Aztex goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo was able to play a perfectly placed ball onto the foot of a streaking Lance Watson. The attempt showed a lot of promise until Watson was tripped up just outside of the Islanders goal box.

Austin was able to draw first blood though when Maxwell Griffin's shot made its way past Puerto Rico goalkeeper Gaudette in the 24th minute. Griffin received the ball at the top of the box and was able to get himself turned around and beat a defender before lacing a shot, which was deflected by a Puerto Rico defender past the outstretched arm of Gaudette.

It took Puerto Rico 13 minutes to answer Griffin's goal but the Islander goal was taken with flair.

As the ball bobbled around five yards outside the Aztex goal, Puerto Rico forward Nicholas Addlery was able to get himself set in prime position if a bounce were to fall his way. That bounce came to Addlery and he was able to rifle a left footed volley past Gallardo for the Islander score in the 35 minute.

The Aztex leave the game the same way they came into it, in first place in the league and play their next game at House Park this Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
