July 27, 2010 - U.S. Soccer Federation D-2 (USSF D-2)
Austin Aztex News Release

The Mississippi Brilla, one of three Aztex affiliates competing in the USL Premier Development League (PDL), recently finished an undefeated season with a record of 11-0-3. Brilla players Lucas Paulini, Ahmad Ihmeidan, Moses Aduny, Michael Azira, and David Lilly all received weekly honors during the season, with Aduny being selected as Player of the Week after scoring four goals in two games in week seven.

The Brilla will host four former Aztex U23 players in the Southern Conference Playoffs this weekend in Jackson, Miss. The first match pits Ezual Lewis and the Laredo Heat against Keith Armstrong and the Baton Rouge Capitals.

Mississippi then squares off against the Houston Leones, which prominently features Aztex alums Elcio Freitas and Gary Boughton. The Leones claimed the final playoff spot by narrowly edging the DFW Tornados, who suited up three former Aztex players: Gifton Noel-Williams, Andres Cuero, and Sean Gordon.

The Leones and Tornados finished the season with identical records and split their four head-to-head matches. Houston advanced over Dallas-Fort Worth by virtue of having scored one more goal during the course of their 16 game season.

Another Aztex affiliate, the West Texas United Sockers, were also in the playoff mix until the final weekend but dropped their final game to the Houston Leones 2-1. Sockers defender Omar Tena claimed Player of the Week honors in week two with a goal and an assist in their 2-1 victory over Laredo.

The first Aztex PDL affiliate, Victoria Highlanders FC, were also in the playoff hunt late into the season, but found themselves on the wrong side of a 4-1 result against the undefeated Portland Timbers U-23 side. Former Aztex U23 defender Jamie Cunningham started for the Highlanders and contributed a goal and two assists.

In other PDL playoff action, former Aztex U23 captain Chris Spendlove takes the field for the MPS Portland Phoenix as they take on Reading United AC in Ottawa.

Aztex U23 alum Milton Blanco also had a terrific season for the Fresno Fuego, netting seven goals and adding four assists.

Jason Williams, former Aztex U23 goalkeeper, started eight games for the Des Moines Menace PDL side earning a 1.65 goals against average. Williams helped lead the Menace to a fourth place division in the Heartland Division.

The Austin Aztex USSF Division-2 Pro League team currently sits in first place with 35 points, five points clear of any other team. Austin faces rival Miami FC on July 31 at 7:30 p.m. at House Park.
