SEFCIK SURGE

Entering the season Kevin Sefcik was the Red Barons career leader in batting with a .334 mark compiled during the 1995-1996 and 1997 seasons, albeit it in just 329 at bats. At the start of this season Sefcik looked anything like a great hitter batting just .150 (9-60) through April 27. Since then he has returned to his old form hitting a solid .330 to raise his season average to .285. Most recently he has hit in 11 straight games going 18-40 (.450) and he has hit in 30 of the last 34 games (43-126, .341). The big question now is where does Sefcik rank on the all-time list? His current .314 career mark is 3rd behind Ricky Otero (.318) and Rick Schu (.315).

COMPLETE GAMES ARE RARE

Amaury Telemaco's complete game last night was just the fourth of the season by a Red Barons pitcher (2nd by Telemaco) and the 1st since Telemaco's 1-hit gem June 1 vs. Charlotte in game #1 of a DH. In fact none of the four CG's have been of the traditional 9-inning variety. The other two – by Ken Pumphrey,4/9 vs. Roc and Josh Hancock, 5/18 vs. Cha) were both part of doubleheaders. On the bright side, prior to June 6th no pitcher had lasted longer than 7.0 innings. Since June 6th the 8.0 inning mark has been achieved four times, three consecutive by Telemaco and once by Ryan Madson.

HAMELS SHINES IN EXHIBITION

Cole Hamels, the Phillies #1 pick in the 2002 draft took the mound for the Phillies in the Hall of Fame game Monday at Cooperstown vs. Tampa Bay and impressed. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound Hamels, who is with the single-A Lakewood BlueClaws, struck out nine, walked one and allowed three hits and three runs, two of them earned. He struck out the side twice while displaying a crackling fastball and a nasty change-up, and was named the game's MVP.

CHAPMAN ALMOST IN THE LEAD

With 5 RBI in his last four games and 18 in the last 16 games, Travis Chapman is now one RBI from the IL lead of 49 currently held by former Pawtucket slugger Julio Zuleta.

ON THIS DATE IN RED BARONS HISTORY

June 18, 1990.......Wally Ritchie allows just three hits and two earned runs in a 4-2 victory over the Tidewater Tides. Ritchie allowed both his run in the bottom of the 8th but Chuck McElroy closed the door pitching the final two innings for the save. Kennedy Infante, Mickey Morandini and Victor Rosario each had two hits.
