Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas - U.S. Soccer has announced the pairings for the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the Austin Aztex FC will play host to the Mississippi Brilla of the Premier Development League on June 9th at Nelson Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm.
If the Aztex wins its first-round game, it would then face in the second round the winner of a match featuring the El Paso Patriots, also of the PDL, and the Arizona Sahuaros. The second-round winner would then face an MLS team in the third round on June 30, time and location to be determined.
"It's going to be important to us," Aztex head coach Adrian Heath said of the Open Cup. "Especially since the Charleston Battery (of USL-1) last year got to the final and lost very narrowly and unluckily to D.C. United. ... We have a chance to progress."
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup dates back to 1914, and is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is entering its 96th tournament in 2009.
In a nutshell, the U.S. Open Cup is very similar to domestic cup competitions popular throughout Europe, South America and the rest of the world. Cup competitions, which usually run concurrent with a country's league season, are open in the early stages to any club that can qualify, giving local amateur teams a chance to compete against the best clubs in the nation including teams in the USL-1 and MLS.
