NEW YORK - The 18 Arena Football League franchises are staying busy this offseason with front-office hires, open tryouts, community activities and much more.
Following is a team-by-team rundown of the latest happenings around the League:
Arizona: Rattlers OL/DL STEVE MASCORRO joined Drug Free Arizona and CBS 5 to encourage parents and children to make the pledge to stay drug-free this summer at "Drug Free Splash Day" on August 8 at WaterWorld in Phoenix.
Austin: Wranglers QB JOHN FITZGERALD, a graduate of the University of Tulsa, is taking two prerequisite classes for Medical School - Organic Chemistry and Structural Biology - at Austin Community College this summer.
Chicago: The Rush announced the team will produce a special highlight DVD to commemorate its 2006 season and drive to the ArenaBowl XX championship. The DVD, which will be available later this fall, will be free to the first 1,000 fans who purchase season tickets for the 2007 season, as well as all 2006 season ticket holders who renew their tickets.
Colorado: Crush QB JOHN DUTTON and The Dutton Family Foundation are developing a partnership with the Ethiopian Covenant Church in Holeta, Ethiopia to develop and ensure the success of their children's orphanage.
Columbus: Destroyers Vice President of Football Operations/Line Coach JIM LACHEY will serve as a color commentator for Ohio State radio broadcasts this year. The Buckeyes kickoff their regular season on September 2 vs. Northern Illinois.
Dallas: The Desperados announced the team's plans hold an open tryout on Saturday, October 14 at Texas Stadium in Irving. Interested parties can download a tryout application or get more information at www.dallasdesperados.com.
Georgia: DS WILLIE GRAY and WR/LB DEREK LEE spent time teaching youngsters football skills at three youth football clinics this summer.
Grand Rapids: The Rampage named ALEX CLARK Director of Media Relations. Clark spent the last year in the media relations department of USA Hockey in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Kansas City: The Brigade launched a redesigned version of the team's official Web site, www.kcbrigade.com and opened a team store in Prairie Village, Kansas that showcases new apparel and novelties, discounted replica jerseys, and a new memorabilia line.
Las Vegas: New Gladiators Head Coach DANTON BARTO is currently guiding af2's Memphis Xplorers in their run to the ArenaCup. The Xplorers take on the Green Bay Blizzard on Friday, August 11 in a semifinal playoff matchup.
Los Angeles: Several "A-Team" dancers spent time at the Rob Fukuzaki 9th Annual Heads Up Youth Foundation Charity Golf Tournament at Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge, California, which benefits several Los Angeles-area charities.
Nashville: The Kats announced the team will host an open tryout on Sunday, September 3, at Franklin Road Academy in Nashville. Director of Player Personnel DEAN COKINOS will conduct the workouts and Head Coach PAT SPERDUTO will be on hand with his staff to evaluate players.
New York: The Dragons scheduled their seventh annual open tryout for Saturday, September 9 at 9:15 a.m. The event will be conducted at the Dragons Practice Facility at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale. For more information visit www.newyorkdragons.com.
Orlando: Predators Head Coach JAY GRUDEN is serving as offensive assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under his brother, Head Coach Jon Gruden. The Buccaneers opened training camp on July 27 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Florida and begin their regular season Sunday, September 10 against the Baltimore Ravens.
Philadelphia: Soul WR/DB SEAN SCOTT is working as a reporter for "U-CREW," a UPN/CW 57 television show that focuses on entertainment events in and around Philadelphia.
San Jose: The SaberCats hired CABE FLESHER and BRYAN LAMORANDIER as ticket representatives.
Tampa Bay: The Storm announced the team will conduct an open player tryout on Saturday, September 9 at the University of Tampa beginning at 9 a.m. Interested parties are encouraged to pre-register by filling out the registration form at www.tampabaystorm.com. Players can also register at the University of Tampa the morning of the tryouts.
Utah: Blaze OL/DL HANS OLSEN is working as a fill-in radio host on 1280 the Zone in Salt Lake City and also is in negotiations to work as a NFL analyst for Channel 5 KSL (NBC) in Salt Lake City.
