ABOUT LAST NIGHT... The Maine Whoopie Pies scored seven runs unanswered to take down the Harrisburg Senators 7-4 on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd, their fifteenth sellout of the season. Max Ferguson reached four times with three walks and a game-tying RBI triple, scoring one run. Johanfran Garcia had a multi-hit night with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly. Seven of nine Whoopie Pie players recorded a hit, while the two who did not, Jack Winnay and Will Turner walked and scored two times and one time respectively. LHP Michael Sansone was excellent, holding Harrisburg scoreless in the final four innings of the game.
WATCH OUT FOR WINNAY! Infielder Jack Winnay recorded his tenth multi-hit game as a Sea Dog Friday night, going 2-for-3 with three walks and a run scored. Last night, he walked twice and scored twice, while also being hit by a pitch one time. Overall, he is batting .310 (31-for-100) through his first 29 games in Portland with six doubles, four home runs, 19 runs scored, 11 RBI, and 15 walks. He leads the team in batting average and on-base percentage (.415). Last Wednesday, Winnay snapped a 13 game hit streak that tied Johanfran Garcia for the longest by a Sea Dog this season.
PLAYER(S) OF THE MONTH? Ronald Rosario and Brooks Brannon each hit seven home runs in the month of July, with 19 RBI apiece. Among Eastern League players with ten or more games played in the month, Rosario led the league in SLG% (.708), and Brannon was right behind him (.707). Brannon's OPS was a league-best 1.077, while Rosario's came in at 1.046. Overall, Brannon batted .320 with seven multi-hit games, and Rosario batted .308 with eight multi-hit games.
HOW MANY PITCHES? Friday night's game lasted three hours and 28 minutes, and saw a total of 425 pitches thrown between both teams. Portland hitters saw 12 full counts, while Harrisburg hitters saw 9 full counts. Eleven at bats went to seven or more pitches. Portland and Harrisburg each have 30 walks this week (six per game). Sea Dogs pitchers have thrown more than 200 pitches in a game just three times this season. Two of them have come this week against Harrisburg (211 on 7/31, 205 on 7/28).
EASTERN LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK RHP Max Carlson has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for July 20-26. Carlson made two dominant relief appearances during Portland's series in Binghamton. Over 5.2 scoreless innings, the right-hander did not allow a hit, surrendered just one walk, and struck out seven batters. Carlson becomes the fifth Sea Dogs pitcher to earn Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors this season, joining RHP Blake Wehunt (June 22-28, June 30-July 5), RHP Anthony Eyanson (May 18-24), RHP Patrick Halligan (May 11-17), and RHP John Holobetz (April 13-19).
WALKIN' WILL TURNER Will Turner recorded his 64th walk of the season on Saturday. He is the Eastern League leader in that category, and 3rd best in Double-A despite spending two weeks of the season on the injured list. Turner has played just 71 games, while no one else in the top 30 in Double-A walks has played fewer than 75 games.
THIS DAY IN SEA DOGS HISTORY August 2, 2013 - Portland scored seven runs in the 11th inning to win at Bowie 9-2. The 'Dogs sent 11 men to the plate in the 11th, receiving back-to-back homers from Michael Almanzar and Travis Shaw.
ON THE MOUND RHP Gage Ziehl (5-3, 4.56 ERA) is set for his team-leading seventeenth start of the season for the Sea Dogs. Ziehl has given up two or runs in 11 of his 16 starts this season. In his last outing on July 26th at Binghamton, Ziehl dealt 3.0, innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk. Ziehl was originally drafted by the Yankees in 2024, then traded to the White Sox in 2025, and traded again to the Red Sox in February 2026.
