Atlanta's Charmaine Hooper Fined and Suspended
June 14, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
ATLANTA (Friday, June 14, 2002) - The Women's United Soccer Association Disciplinary Committee fined and suspended Atlanta forward Charmaine Hooper for an incident that occurred during the celebration of her 15th-minute goal in the Beat's 2-0 victory over New York on June 9. Hooper has been fined $250 and will serve a one-game suspension this Saturday (June 15) when Atlanta hosts the Carolina Courage at Herndon Stadium.
After Hooper had scored the game's first goal in the 15th minute, the Atlanta forward displayed a t-shirt promoting a non-league sponsor, violating WUSA policy limiting the independently-supplied equipment permissible for players to wear, along with violating Standard Player Contract prohibitions against players implying WUSA endorsement of a product without WUSA's prior written consent.
The WUSA Disciplinary Committee specifically warned Hooper on May 24, 2002 that such acts were in violation of her contract after the Atlanta striker wore a headband of the same non-league sponsor during an earlier game this season.
