Greeneville Astros News Release
Elizabethton, TN - On Tuesday night at Joe O'Brien Field, the Greeneville Astros (20-19) broke a 2-2 tie with the Elizabethton Twins (23-15) in the top of the ninth when they scored two runs on a wild pitch and catcher's throwing error. The runs ended up being the difference in the game as the Astros won, 4-2, and evened their three-game series at one apiece.
After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Astros struck first with a score in the fourth. After Yonathan Mejia and Bryan Muniz got on with singles, Kristian Trompiz drove a double into right field, with two outs, to bring in a run and give the Astros a 1-0 lead.
With strong pitching, the Astros held onto that one-run lead through the sixth inning. Right-handed pitcher Brock Dykxhoorn started the game and held the Twins scoreless on one hit with two strikeouts through the first three innings. Then, Keegan Yuhl entered the game and pitched three more scoreless innings on two hits and one strikeout.
In the seventh inning, the Twins finally broke through. With two outs and runners on second and third, Dutch Deol connected on a two-run double to propel the Twins into a 2-1 lead.
The Astros did not trail for long as they came right back in the next half inning. Again, with two outs, Luis Reynoso hit a RBI single on a ground ball to center field to score Yonathan Mejia from third and even the score at 2-2.
The Twins had a chance to pull back ahead in the bottom of the eighth with runners at first and third with just one out. However, Dean Deetz struck out the next two batters to send the game into the ninth inning all tied up.
In the top of the ninth, the Astros loaded the bases with a Ydarqui Marte single sandwiched in-between walks by Antonio Nunez and Yonathan Mejia. Then, with two outs and Bryan Muniz batting, the Astros capitalized on the Twins' mistakes to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and another on a catcher's throwing error to put them on top, 4-2.
With the Twins down to their final three outs, Astros' reliever Eric Peterson entered the game in the bottom of the ninth, struck out two, and retired the side to earn his second save. Meanwhile, Dean Deetz picked up the win for the Astros after pitching the seventh and eighth innings and giving up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
The Astros, currently 3.5 games back and in second place in the Appalachian League West, will travel back to Elizabethton to face the division-leading Twins in the rubber match on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
