GREENEVILLE, TN - The Greeneville Astros (16-14) shutout the Bristol Sox (12-18), 3-0, on Thursday night. The win gave the Astros the series as they took two of three against the Sox.

It took a while for the Astros to get going as they did not pick up their first hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. After Telvin Nash led off with a walk, Bubby Williams got a base hit on a line drive to center field and moved Nash over to third. With one out, Bryce Lane singled on a bunt and brought Nash in for the first score of the night. The next batter, Jonathan Merritt, reached on a fielding error by Bristol and allowed Williams to come home all the way from second to give the Astros a 2-0 advantage.

In the eighth inning, Marcus Nidiffer connected on a triple on fly ball to left field. Then Rafael Valenzuela, who had a triple himself in the sixth inning, hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Hector Rodriguez, who was pinch running for Nidiffer.

That score gave the Astros a 3-0 lead, which is all they needed thanks to some good pitching and defense.

Ruben Alaniz (3-2) started for Greeneville and gave them five good innings as he earned the win. He gave up five hits and had three strikeouts.

Travis Smink, Ryan Cole, and Paul Gerrish all came out of the bullpen to help complete the shutout. They gave up just one hit combined over the final four innings. Gerrish pitched the final inning and earned his first save.

The Astros will travel to Kingsport to face the Mets in a three-game series beginning on Friday and follow that up with a three-gamer on the road against the Elizabethton Twins. They will return to Pioneer Park on Thursday, July 29th in another series against the Bristol Sox.
