GREENEVILLE, TN - Greeneville Astros right-handed pitcher Ryan Deemes has been named the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week by MiLB.com for the week of July 20-July 26. Over two games with one start during that span, Deemes went 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA over nine innings while allowing just one run on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
This marks the third weekly league award for the Astros this season following player of the week honors for first baseman Connor Goedert (June 29-July 5) and outfielder Hector Roa (July 6-12). The only other time the Astros have had three such awards in a single season was 2004, when future major leaguer Juan Gutierrez was recognized as pitcher of the week on three separate occasions.
Overall, it is the ninth time in club history the Astros have earned league pitcher of the week honors. Before Deemes, the last time the Astros had a pitcher of the week was the final week of the 2014 season when Brock Dykxhoorn picked up the award one week after Harold Arauz, giving the Astros the honor in consecutive weeks to close the season.
Deemes was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 36th round of the June 2015 draft out of Nicholls State University. On the season, the 22-year-old Louisianan is 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA over seven appearances including two starts. He has pitched a total of 24.0 innings and surrendered two runs on 16 hits with an opponent batting average of .188 against him. In addition, he has allowed just one walk to go along with a total of 16 strikeouts.
