Greeneville Astros News Release
Kingsport, TN - The Greeneville Astros (4-1) visited the Kingsport Mets (0-5) on Saturday to complete the game suspended by rain on Friday as well as play the regularly scheduled game. Coincidentally, both games concluded with the exact same score and the Astros on top 9-5.
The suspended game began in the top of the sixth inning with the game tied at 5-5. The Astros took the lead and control of the game with a three-run seventh inning. Brian Blasik knocked in one run with a base hit and Marc Wik brought in the other two on a single of his own to right field with runners at first and third base.
Kingsport's only serious shot at getting back in the game came in the eighth inning when Brandon Kaupe singled and Gavin Cecchini doubled to give the Mets runners at first and third with one out. However, Greeneville reliever Jordan Jankowski was able to get a strikeout and fly out from the next two batters and end the inning with no damage done.
For good measure, Ernesto Genoves added a RBI-double for the Astros in the ninth inning to put the final touch on the game.
Jankowski (2-0) pitched two innings, gave up one hit and got the win for Greeneville. Michael Dimock also went two innings with two hits in picking up his first save.
In the regularly scheduled game, the Astros nine runs came on just four hits. Meanwhile, Kingsport had five runs on six hits, but committed four errors to Greeneville's one.
In the top of the first inning, Greeneville scored a run when Jean Batista came home on a wild pitch. Then, Daniel Minor, who was making his professional debut after being selected in the ninth round of this year's draft, pitched three innings and gave up just one hit while striking out three.
In the fifth inning, the Astros loaded the bases with two walks and a fielding error from the Mets. Then, a Brian Blasik line drive to left field drove in two runs and a ground rule double on a fly ball to right field by the hot-hitting Batista brought in another. That made the score 4-0 in favor of the Astros.
Kingsport finally got some breaks going in the bottom of the fifth and managed to even up the score before it was all said and done. Four consecutive walks by Greeneville to begin the inning got the first run for the Mets. Then, a RBI single by Eris Peguero was sandwiched between two run-scoring sacrifice flies by Anthony Chavez and Yeixon Ruiz.
With the score tied up at 4-4, the Astros actually picked up two more runs off wild pitches from Kingsport in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Mets got one of those back on another sacrifice fly by Chavez to leave Greeneville up by one at 6-5.
The Astros stretched that lead over the next two innings with a Michael Martinez sacrifice fly into foul territory, an Ernesto Genoves line drive single to center field and a Blasik double on a ground ball to left field. In the end, Greeneville matched the exact score of 9-5 from the previous game and have now clinched their second straight road series to begin the season.
Right-hander Zach Dando (1-0), who entered the game in the fifth inning, got the win after striking out one and giving up one hit in his inning of work.
The Astros will look for the sweep at Kingsport on Sunday night before heading back to Greeneville for the team's home opener on Monday, June 25 against the Princeton Rays. For more information on the Greeneville Astros, please visit www.greenevilleastros.com or call (423) 638-0411.
